The holidays always make me feel grateful for all that we have, especially family and friends who are safe, loved and nearby, and jobs that give us dignity, reflect our passions and provide us with plenty. It goes without saying that many are not so lucky, and much of my work over the past three years has been devoted to working on the issue of human trafficking, or modern day slavery. People affected by this crime are also mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, brothers, sisters and children who long for a better life. I do believe that a world is possible where all people are treated with dignity, accorded their basic human rights and are able to work and live in environments that are safe and supportive and nourishing of their gifts. A couple of years ago, I was given the gift of encountering a wonderful human being, Dr. TK Logan of UK, who after a brief conversation, agreed to do a study of trafficking in Kentucky. She took this leap of faith, which eventually translated into research that helped usher in a state law on trafficking and a substantial federal grant to non-profits working with trafficking survivors in KY. She works harder than just about anyone I know, so I was honored when she included me in writing an article about human trafficking for the journal Trauma, Violence and Abuse. You can find the article here: http://tva.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/10/1/3 or find out how to aid victims in your own community here: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/trafficking/.
May 2009 bring about more peace and justice in our world.
